About Us

Hello and welcome to The Wig Room Training Academy

My name is Vincenza and I felt both compelled and inspired to create The Wig Room Training Academy. Even after over 30 years of working in the industry I am still very passionate about it. I feel it is now my time to pass on the skills to the next generation in the hope that you too enjoy an amazing and varied career as I have.

During my 30 years I have had some amazing opportunities and experiences, such as working in the West End, Broadway, Japan and Moscow.  I have also been lucky enough to have been part of a BAFTA Award Winning Hair and Makeup team for The Sound of Music Live (ITV 2015)

I began life in pantomime in 1984 where I learned all about ‘stamina’.  Three shows a day really taught me how to cope with the long hours. I gained such valuable experience from this (you never forget your very first job!) and also learned very quickly about etiquette particularly when working with celebrities.

Since then I have been fortunate enough to keep on working in what has been a varied and exciting career. I believe my passion has stayed at the forefront as each job is a totally new experience and it brings something new to learn each time. That is still the case today.

Over the years I have been Head of Department on some of the biggest West End and National and International productions such as 42nd Street (when Catherine Zeta Jones was a chorus girl!) at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Phantom of the Opera, Opera House Manchester ,  Grease, Chicago, West Side Story, Legally Blonde at The Savoy Theatre, La Cage Aux Folles, West End and Broadway, Matilda The Musical at The Cambridge Theatre…

TV credits include Mr Selfridge ITV, The Crown Netflix, Taboo BBC, The Sound of Music Live ITV, Harlots ITV Encore, Hulu

As well as my extensive experience I have taken the time to complete an intensive teacher training course in order to get a better understanding of how students learn best. I wanted to learn how best to deliver my knowledge to you the students.

IMG_20170214_191418[1]The course will consist of an introduction to your career.  What you learn on this course will be adaptable to all three aspects of the industry ie, Theatre, TV, Film and more.  Theatre can be the most intensive as it happens ‘live’ and there is little room for error.  This is fantastic training and will put you in good stead for the other aspects.  The beauty of this industry is that you can work between the three and never get bored.

The course will also include lots of wig work, preparing hair before applying a wig, quick changes which is where you will learn to take off and put on a different wig within a matter of seconds as well as learning period hairstyling on real heads, pair work and bringing in models to work on too. Students will learn to work with a variety of styling aids such as hot sticks, heated rollers and wet setting using a wig oven to dry them.

We are a Training Academy offering 12 week intensive professional courses in all aspects of period hair and wig dressing for the TV ,Film and Theatre industry.  We also run short courses and workshops for those who want a refresher course in working with wigs … or just to get a basic understanding of styling wigs.

IMG_20161025_200612[1]WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Students will learn all aspects of period hairdressing on each other as well as working on real hair and synthetic wigs. You will learn everything from early Victorian hair styling to present day, taking in Drag wigs and makeup along the way! You will learn how to set hair and work out how to set your style. Also included is how to apply period makeup to compliment your hairdressing. Students will work on each other as well as bringing in your own models.

Students will be taught by me and other professionals who have worked in the industry for over 20 years, are still currently working and who have teacher training qualifications as an added bonus!
Make up is included on the course yet the focus is very much on the hair as this is where the gap lies.  The skills taught on this course will relate precisely to what is needed in the industry, giving you the opportunity to become very employable. Focusing mainly on one aspect means that students will complete the course having mastered skills and confidence in hair.

The course is designed to be 100% practical, enjoyable and fun and students will learn to work as a team as well as boost confidence. Students who show skill, aptitude and commitment will receive work experience either in a West End theatre or on a film/TV set.

You will be taught by professionals (myself) as well as other professionals with over 20 years of experience in the industry and who are currently working professionally.
